President's Perspective Mission. Teaching and learning. Valuing people. Responding to growth.
Expanding facilities. Managing resources. These critical areas of focus arethe pillars of Lewis University's current strategic plan, Vision 2011: Shaping the Future, Responding to Growth, launched in 2007. The work outlined in this plan –and the pages that follow – speak to a major transformation happening here atLewis. Our growth is steady, our Mission and core values remain constant, and ourquality and effectiveness continue to increase.
Our dynamic Mission is at the center of all that we are accomplishing here at Lewis University. It is rooted in the vision of Saint John Baptist de La Salle, founderof the Christian Brothers who sponsor Lewis University. That commitment toMission is evident in a variety of faith-based courses stressing ethics and socialjustice, as well as in special scholarship opportunities to allow greater access to qualified but needy students. It isalso shown in the way the faculty explicitly incorporate the Mission into their syllabi and program offerings.
Another example is our enthusiastic celebration of diversity, as well as the services that we offer to our regionalcommunity through various Christian outreach and educational programs.
The recent addition of several endowed Centers of Excellence is another fine demonstration of our effort to engage our students in scholarly activity. With a highly generous $500,000 gift from Lowell Stahl, who is one of theoutstanding business leaders in Chicagoland, Lewis is pleased to have launched the Lowell Stahl Center for RealEstate Studies. Lewis is also most grateful to Trustee Emerita Kathryn Kelly and her sister, Rose Mary Perryman, who are the executors for the estate of Colonel Stephen S. and Lyla Doherty. They have made an exceptionalcommitment of $750,000 to begin The Colonel Stephen S. and Lyla Doherty Center for Aviation and Health Research.
Meanwhile, as our reputation for excellence spreads, applications increase and our student population progressively expands. We also continue to add new and relevant academic programs at the undergraduate andgraduate levels. Lewis is recognized regionally and nationally as one of America's top tier universities in ourcategory of higher education by both US News and World Report and The Princeton Review. As our academic programs and overall enrollment develop, the campus will continue to be transformed to accommodate this expansion. In 2007, thanks to the extraordinary generosity of James and Anne LaGrippe, Johnand Jeanette D'Arcy and the Lewis Foundation, the new $1.7 million James A. LaGrippe Pastoral Center wasdedicated. In addition, our fifth regional campus was opened, in Chicago at De La Salle Institute on the dynamicNear South Side, and our Tinley Park Campus was expanded. Additional campus improvements include a verywelcomed renovation of the Student Union, thanks to a generous and timely gift from Trustee Edward Prodehl andhis wife, Sandy, and a major upgrade of Ryan Hall last summer. Furthermore, as a follow-up to their wonderful giftlast year for the 75th Anniversary Time Plaza, Brent and Jean Wadsworth very generously have offered additionalsupport to create a beautiful new performance area and art gallery at the Oremus Fine Arts Center.
Moreover, in pursuing our Catholic and Lasallian Mission, Lewis remains firmly committed to ensuring that scholarship aid awards are available for our financially needy students. For instance, nearly $100,000 in netrevenue was raised for need-based scholarships at Lewis University's Signum Fidei (Sign of Faith) Celebration lastfall. Additionally, Lewis is honored to have received a number of newly endowed scholarships. For example, in2007 the Joliet chapter of UNICO, the largest Italian American service organization in the United States, establisheda generously endowed scholarship here at Lewis. Others have been established by Trustee Andy Langert and hiswife, Candy, and by retired faculty member, Dr. Paul Kaiser, and his wife, Kathy. Through scholarships and otherUniversity funding, Lewis provides approximately $15 million in institutional financial aid, apart from governmentstudent grants and loans.
In short, Lewis is steadily moving forward in the progressive transformation of our entire educational enterprise, which is ensuring that the University remains faithful to our mission while meeting current andanticipated needs throughout our regional community and for thousands of present and potential students.
Everything we undertake is rooted in our Mission, which influences all of our major initiatives. With theseobjectives always in view, we look forward to a hopeful and vigorous future. Moreover, we invite our students, alumni and the community to participate in our ongoing transformation, as Lewis University continues toward itsachievable goal of becoming one of the finest mid-sized Catholic universities in the Midwest.

As much as we appreciate the value of the philanthropic support we receive, there isalso no greater joy than seeing the faces of incoming students and parents come to lifeas they enroll here to study. We remain committed to ensuring that future generationsof students and families will have access to the high quality, relevant, Catholiceducation that we offer at Lewis University. To be successful in that regard, we must: • Continue to grow the scholarships and financial support we provide for an increasingly diverse student population. We must never allow financial constraintsto limit access. We must remain open and accessible to those who seek to learn inthe Lasallian tradition.
• Make investments in facilities and technology that will help us achieve widespread recognition for quality. We seek to be known as one of the finest, mid-sized,comprehensive Catholic universities in the Midwest.
Just as we appreciate the value of your past support, so also would it be our honorand pleasure to work with you and others to make possible a future of continuedexcellence and distinction at Lewis University. I cordially invite you to join with us.
