Carrying MEDICINES offshore
THE NATIONAL OIL&GAS INDUSTRY STANDARD FOR PROFESSIONALS
CARRYING MEDICINES OFFSHORE
Work safely or don't work at all
When working on restricted installations and systems, strict procedure
applies. For there is always the risk of dangerous substances being
released. Therefore, read the work permit carefully and check if the
stated control measures have indeed be taken. Subsequently, take the
precautions relevant to the job you are about to take on.
Always stay alert regarding any increase of dangerous substance
concentration. When in doubt: inquire or suspend the work!
Speaking the same clear language regarding Health, Safety and Environment, and
harmonization of regulations by focusing primarily on agreements between companies
and contractors.
That's the goal the member parties of HSElife UNIO pursue.
CARRYING MEDICINES OFFSHORE
If you're on medication and you need to carry your medicines
with your offshore, you have to report this before departure. For
medicines could possibly influence your judgment or response
capacity. Everybody who knows the risk of working in a processing
environment, also knows that a quick and adequate response can
be vital. Therefore, this rule has a clear and important reason:
the safety of all on board.
CARRYING MEDICINES OFFSHORE
Medicines can cause "nasty" side effects. At a certain dose, the ability to perform well during work may be influenced. When taking medicines, there's also another possibility of undesirable or even dangerous situations. If someone who is on medication gets hurt, a wrong diagnose or undesirable contraindication may occur when medical aid personnel are not aware of this. This could endanger lives.
CARRYING MEDICINES OFFSHORE
Tranquillizers, barbiturates such as Valium or Librium, antipsychotics,
antidepressants and blood thinners are medicines to be careful with. Basically,
even aspirin has to be reported. Because even aspirin can influence the effect
of other medicines possibly administered by medical aid personnel.
Attention: some medication may be prescribed for a different purpose than they were initially intended for.
CARRYING MEDICINES OFFSHORE
REPORT OR NOT?
All and any medication used must be reported before departure. For all medication, also for homeopathic medicine and certain exotic herbs, a written statement from a family doctor or medical examiner has to be supplied. Over-the-counter medicines not included. If necessary, these statements may be verified by the medic or, if a medical officer is not present, by the OIM.
CARRYING MEDICINES OFFSHORE
REPORT TO WHOM?
All medication should be reported to Security at Den Helder Airport and on the platform to the medic or, if a medical officer is not present, to the OIM.
CARRYING MEDICINES OFFSHORE
Security at Den Helder checks regularly for medication. If someone carries unreported medicines, he or she will be refused for the flight.
After arrival at the platform and during the stay on the platform there will be no checks. Still, this cannot be a reason to carry and use any unreported medicines.
CARRYING MEDICINES OFFSHORE
Any and all medication must be reported before departure,
even homeopathic medicine and exotic herbs.
Over-the-counter medicines are excluded.
ALWAYS BE CAREFUL WITH MEDICATION, FOR YOUR OWN
AND OTHER PEOPLE'S SAFETY!

1. Why, before leaving for an offshore location, do you have to
report using and carrying medicines?
A) Working in a process environment implies potential risk. This means you may need to respond quickly and adequately. This is of vital importance to ensure everybody's safety. Using medicines may influence your judgment or capacity to respond, which may result in unsafe situations.
B) In advance, the medic being present at the offshore location has to be aware of any medication you may be using. He will report this to the HMI. The HMI will make sure that you won't execute any dangerous activities, because medicines may influence your judgment or capacity to respond. This may compromise the quality of the job.
C) Medicines can cause nasty side effects. Because of this, the quality of the job may be compromised because working in a process environment implies potential risk.
