Latin American Pharmacogenomics and Personalized MedicineConference 2nd Latin American Pharmacogenomics and Personalized Medicine Congress27–29 June 2012, Rio de Janeiro, RJ, Brazil There are nearly 600 million people living in 24 Latin American countries, speaking two major languages (Portuguese and Spanish) and sharing ancestral roots in America, Europe and Africa. Ethnic and cultural diversity, socioeconomical, scientific and technological disparities across Latin America must be taken into account in the design, interpretation and implications of pharmacogenomic studies in this region. The conference covered some of these aspects, but also took on a more global approach on the growing contribution of genomic information and biotechnological tools to the way medicines are developed, regulated and prescribed to patients. Translation of pharmacogenomics into clinical practice was the topic of a keynote lecture and two debate sessions. A preconference Introductory Course of Pharmacogenomics was offered.

The Asian Conference on Psychology & the Behavioral Sciences 2013 Official Conference Proceedings Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy of Bipolar Depressive Disorder (Manic-depressive): A Case Study Mohammad Khodayarifard University of Tehran, Iran The Asian Conference on Psychology & the Behavioral Sciences 2013 Official Conference Proceedings 2013 Introduction: The usual treatments of the bipolar depressive disorder, such as medication and electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) have negative side effects on memory and cognition and the likelihood of recurrence. Researchers and clinical experts have been trying to design alternative psychotherapeutic methods for treating this disorder. For example, cognitive behavior therapy (CBT) has been shown to be an efficient treatment. Objective: the purpose of the present case study is to examine the efficiency of CBT combined with medication in the treatment of bipolar depression. Method: Two participants with bipolar disorder were treated using CBT and medication. In this method, techniques such as self-monitoring, positivism, relaxation, cognitive re-construction, training problem solving and social skills were applied. Result: The results showed that the combination of CBT and medication can be effective in treating bipolar depression. Conclusion: The findings, which are congruent with those of previous investigations, indicating that unhealthy beliefs, attitudes and cognitive constructs may play an important role in the formation and continuation of this disorder, and therefore a proper way of treating it would be to work with those unhealthy cognitive constructs. Reversal of Reserpine-Induced Orofacial Dyskinesia And Catalepsy by Sida Cordifolia Navneet Khurana, Pushpendra Kumar Jain, Yogesh Pounikar, Shailendra Patil & Asmita Gajbhiye Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Dr. Hari Singh Gour Central University, Sagar, Madhya Pradesh, India E-mail : [email protected] Abstract - Reserpine-induced catalepsy is an animal model used to mimic the behavioural symptoms of Parkinson's disease (PD) in experimental animals. The present study was designed to investigate the effect of aqueous and hydro-ethanolic extracts of Sida cordifolia (AESC and EESC respectively), in reserpine-induced orofacial dyskinesia and catalepsy along with lipid peroxidation evaluated by the levels of thiobarbituric acid like reactive substances (TBARS) in rat forebrain. Sida cordifolia is a well know Ayurvedic plant which has been administered anciently for nervous disorders such as hemiplegia, facial paralysis and PD. It also possesses significant in vitro and ex vivo antioxidant activity. Repeated administration of reserpine (1 mg/kg; s.c.) on alternate days (day 1, 3 and 5) for a period of 5 days significantly increased the vacuous chewing movements (VCM), tongue protrusions (TP), orofacial bursts (OB) and catalepsy along with increased forebrain TBARS levels in rats which was dose-dependently reversed by AESC (50, 100 and 250 mg/kg; p.o.) treatment. No significant effect on these behavioural parameters was observed following varying dose (50, 100 and 250 mg/kg; p.o.) treatment of EESC in reserpine treated rats. These findings suggest the involvement of antioxidant activity along with other underlying mechanisms for the ameliorative effect of AESC in reserpine-induced orofacial dyskinesia and catalepsy. It predicts the scope of AESC in the possible treatment of neuroleptic-induced orofacial dyskinesia and PD.
